Olympic weightlifting, or weightlifting, is a sport in which participants attempt a maximum weight single lift of a barbell loaded with weight plates. It consists of two lifts: the clean and jerk and the snatch. In the snatch, the weightlifter lifts the barbell from the floor to overhead in a single movement. In the clean & jerk, the weightlifter lifts the barbell first from the floor to the shoulders (the clean) and then from the shoulders to overhead (the jerk).
The Olympic lifts as well as variations such as the power snatch, power clean, power jerk, hang snatch, hang clean and more are often used by athletes to develop strength and explosiveness to improve performance in their sports. The lifts will test your explosive strength generally with smaller weights compared to power-lifting which tests your limit strength (deadlift, back squat, bench press). Because these lifts require a greater range of motion during the lift they must be executed faster and with accuracy which requires appropriate mobility. At Uncommon we use these lifts and their components to train for explosive and functional strength.
The focus of WL101 is on mastering basic barbell movements with detailed progressions. This class is appropriate for those just introduced to the barbell or any athlete looking for a dedicated time to practice the lifts. The class meets for 1 hour each week on Tuesday evenings either at 5:30pm or 6:30pm.
This class is also a prerequisite to move from CrossFit 1.0 to CrossFit 2.0. After attending several WL 101 classes and getting a coach’s approval, you can move from CrossFit 1.0 to CrossFit 2.0 where you will see the lifts programmed into your group CrossFit classes.
