It’s Hard

12.30.2013

If you want a thing bad enough to go out and fight for it,
to work day and night for it, to give up your time, your peace
and sleep for it… if all that you dream and scheme is about it,
…and life seems useless and worthless without it… if you gladly
sweat for it and fret for it and plan for it and lose all your terror
of the opposition for it…if you simply go after that thing that you
want with all your capacity, strength and sagacity, faith hope and confidence and stern pertinacity…if neither cold, poverty, famine, nor gout, sickness nor pain, of body and brain, can keep you away from the thing that you want…if dogged and grim you beseech and beset it, with the help of God, you will get it. – Les Brown

That’s one of my favorite quotes, when I read it I always get motivated. It reminds me of my dream, of the reason I know I’m on this earth and when I feel I’m loosing focus I always like to come back to it, to remind myself why I’m here. But the thing that really stands out to me in this quote and the thing the author I feel was trying to convey is, It’s Hard. Pursuing your dream, your purpose, is hard.

I firmly believe each of us has a unique purpose for our lives. That in us there are books to be written and illnesses to be cured, lives to be changed, songs written, inventions to be made. I believe we all have a potential for greatness. I don’t mean wealth or fame necessarily although that can come from the pursuit of your purpose. What I’m talking about is the satisfaction of diligently, everyday, pursuing that thing you feel is your purpose and in that is greatness.

Now finding your purpose or dream is not something stumbled upon. Greatness is not your destiny, it is a choice and you have to choose to pursue it. It’s not something that happens easily and because you love it, it just comes with little effort. People who follow their dreams follow them with a laser like focus. If you don’t know your dream then you need to spend time in thought. Not time reading books or listening to podcasts. You need to spend time thinking about what you want to accomplish in life. Spend time in serious thought, be honest with yourself. What brings emotion in you and causes an excitement?

You want to pursue real state, coaching, starting a business, how much time do you spend pursuing it now…right now? With the power of the internet there is little holding us back from attaining knowledge in any topic. You have no excuse, If you want to pursue it there is endless knowledge on endless topics. Those who end up living out their dreams have spent many many hours pursuing it in silence, when no one knew, they were reading and studying and observing. They were thinking of how they would do it and what it would look like. Greg Glassman tells a great story, when starting CrossFit one of his partners expressed how afraid he was of it failing. Greg looked at him and said “If it all falls apart we will get jobs flipping burgers and on our lunch break we will be in the parking lot teaching people how to air squat”. Your purpose will carry with it such a desire that even if you do not succeed it wont stop you from doing it, you will do it despite your circumstances.

The realization that we have one chance at this life, we have one go around seems to be a constant thought for me. It causes a restlessness and a desire to move, to be active and to put more thought into how I use my time. I know many will read this and shrug it off. Most people are content with mediocrity. But I’m not writing this for everyone, I’m writing it for that person that as they read and think of a life of purpose, of helping people and waking each day with a mission, they get a lump in their throat and their heart beats a little faster. Not everyone will get it but you who needs the push, this is it. Don’t let fear cripple you, don’t let a lack of credentials cripple you. This is the year you work on you, hone your skills, work on your mind, train your body.

Read something positive everyday. They say that language is the software of the mind. Learn to speak positive of your self and others. This alone will have an amazing effect on your life.
Steve Duncanson said”…life is a fight for territory and when you stop fighting for what you want, what you don’t want will automatically take over”
So this year fight for what you want. Increased fitness, eating cleaner, build your business, increase sales, be a better boss, be positive. Read about it, practice it, go to weekend seminars to learn more. The only things stopping you from reaching your potential is you. Seriously no one else is keeping you from it. You have to believe you have it in you and by honing your skills and increasing your knowledge, by surrounding yourself with good people you will increase your faith.

Write down five reasons why you must pursue your purpose, 5 reasons why you wont fail. Your reasons will drive you. Reasons will wake you early in the morning and keep you up at night. Know why your doing what you are doing and repeat your reasons to yourself every day. When the wind blows…and it will blow and life hits you with all it has your reasons will drive you, they will be the rock you lean on.

This is a new year. Pursue new things.
